Message from Vice-Chancellor

Rev. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J.

Dear Friends, our dream of establishing a Jesuit University has come true. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone for St. Xavier's University on December 27, 2013. The St. Xavier's University Act was unanimously passed in the West Bengal Assembly on December 15, 2016. The Hon'ble Governor, Mr. Keshari Nath Tripathi gave his consent to the Act on January 16, 2017.

After three full years of hard work, two Main buildings were completed and ready - The Laxmi and Usha Mittal Foundation Building (Academic Block) and the Jesuit Residence (Britto House). The inauguration of the First Academic Session 2017- 2018 and the University campus was held on July 7, 2017. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, the Hon'ble Education Minister, Dr. Partho Chatterjee, Mr. L.N. Mittal and Mrs. Usha Mittal, Rev. Fr. Jeyaraj Veluswamy and several other dignitaries, Alumni, Alumnae, the first historical batch of Students and their parents graced this momentous occasion.

The Hon'ble Chief Minister congratulated the Jesuits for setting up yet another seat of higher learning of strong spiritual and human values; she highlighted the contributions of St. Xavier's towards the academic, cultural and social endorsements of West Bengal. She said, "St. Xavier's played an exemplary role in spreading excellence in Education and spreading Peace and harmony". She expressed her firm belief that St. Xavier's University Kolkata will soon be of global significance, thriving on the principles of faith and wisdom.

Mr. L.N. Mittal flew down from London to witness St. Xavier's spread its wings. He acknowledged the contribution of his Alma Mater at the inauguration ceremony. "I have always seen opportunity in challenge and that taught me to take bold decisions," said Mr. Mittal. After the inaugural ceremony, he interacted with Xavierians, past and present, in an Amphitheatre classroom. He said, "It is always a great pleasure to come back to Kolkata. Today is a great day for St. Xavier's. Fr. Felix Raj and I have been dreaming of this day for some years now. When we met in London we discussed about it and now it has become a reality."

"I have always seen opportunity in challenge and that started at St. Xavier's. I am indebted to St. Xavier's for inculcating in me a sense of adventure and giving me confidence to face bold decisions, while keeping me grounded", Mr. Mittal added.

From among 3360 applicants, we selected 400 students for four Post Graduate Courses and two Under Graduate courses, based on merit. The First Academic Session commenced on July 10, 2017. Classes have been going well and the 1st Semester is over with the results announced on January 31, 2018. Our focus is on Excellence, Equity, Expansion and Employability for which we create opportunities in the field of Teaching, Learning, Research and Consultancy respectively. Our Xavierian family is deeply rooted in the Ignatian Charism - Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God) and Magis (Greater).

The University emphasises on service learning and social dimension of Education. The Department of Outreach Programs organized Shishu Mela in which about 75 University students involved themselves as volunteers to organize the Mela for 100 neighbourhood children.

The University celebrated its Foundation Day on January 15, 2018. The Hon'ble Education Minister, Dr. Partho Chatterjee was the Chief Guest and the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Prof. Suranjan Das delivered the Foundation Day lecture.
