Semester System

Semester refers to the duration of an academic period, typically six months, and applies to all programmes of study conducted in the semester system.
There shall be two semesters in an Academic Year (AY), i.e. Odd Semester (July to December) and Even Semester (January to June).
The undergraduate (UG) degree programmes (excluding undergraduate law degree programmes) are four years in duration, divided into eight semesters (Semester 1 to Semester 8).
The undergraduate (UG) law degree programmes, i.e. B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) are of five years in duration, divided into ten semesters (Semester 1 to Semester 10).
The postgraduate degree (PG) programmes are of two years in duration, divided into four semesters (Semester 1 to Semester 4).

The Almanac

It is the synopsis of academic activities related to Examinations with a tentative date and deadlines or a range of dates.
It is published on the University Website, Prospectus and Calendar for public reference before the commencement of an Academic Year (AY).

Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA)

Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) refers to the assessment process based on continuous evaluation of students through various methods, including written tests, assignments, seminars, tutorials, laboratory assignments, and term papers, during an academic period as prescribed by the relevant programme curriculum and syllabus.
Each department will inform the students about the CIA programme at the beginning of the Semester.
In general, the marks distribution of Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) will comprise three different components, namely, CIA Written Test (WT), Other Component (OC) and also Attendance (applicable for undergraduate degree courses). It may change depending on the nature of the course, level, etc.
CIA Written Test (WT) will be notified and conducted centrally by the Office of the Controller of Examinations (COE Office).
Ordinarily, the CIA Written Test (WT) will be conducted after seven to eight weeks from the commencement of classes.
Other Component (OC) will comprise assignments, seminars, tutorials, case studies, presentations, other relevant classroom activities, field visits, industry visits etc.
The distribution of marks of the Other Component (OC) of each Paper will be recommended by the concerned Board of Study (BOS).
The activities and assessments related to the Other Component (OC) will be conducted by the faculty concerned.

In Four-year undergraduate courses, five per cent (5%) of the total marks for a paper (one-sixth of total CIA marks) is allotted to attendance, and marks will be awarded according to the calculation given below:

Note: The above-mentioned assessment model related to the distribution of CIA marks can be modified to accommodate the recommendation by the expert committee or Board of Studies (BOS) for the course categories like Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC), Skill Enhancement Elective Courses (SEEC) or Common Value-Added Courses (CVAC).

For practical papers, the CIA will be conducted by the concerned department as per the recommendations of the Board of Study (BOS).
The final CIA results will be displayed on the Students' Notice Board.

End Semester Examinations

End Semester Examinations are held ordinarily at the end of the Semester, i.e. between November and December for Odd Semester, and May and June for Even Semester respectively.

End Semester Examinations (ESE) for Theory Courses

End Semester Theory Examination is the final examination as prescribed by the concerned programme curriculum and syllabus, conducted at the end of the Semester.
Further, the details of the duration of the End Semester Theory Examination, total marks, credit and weightage in terms of percentage of the total evaluation components shall be as specified in the concerned programme curriculum and syllabus.

The Assessment Model of the End Semester Theory Examinations of different programmes will be calculated according to the calculation given below:

Important Notes:

The above-mentioned assessment model related to the distribution of marks is also applicable to practical papers.
To qualify for any course, it is mandatory to appear in the End Semester Examination (ESE).
The above-mentioned assessment model related to the distribution of End Semester Examinations marks can be amended or revised to accommodate the recommendation by the expert committee or Board of Studies (BOS) for the course categories like Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC), Skill Enhancement Elective Courses (SEEC) or Common Value-Added Courses (CVAC).
The Composite paper has two components: Theory and Practical. A student must pass separately in both components.
For the 2-year Postgraduate (PG) Law courses, the qualifying marks will be 50% of the Full Marks in the Dissertation. A dissertation shall be an essential part of the LL.M. programme, to be carried out under the supervision of a departmental faculty member(s).
The Dissertation shall be evaluated based on the written thesis (60%) and an oral defence (40%).
The tentative starting dates of the End Semester Theory Examination shall be published in the Almanac of the University, or as per the University Notifications to this effect.
End Semester Theory Examinations of a programme are written examinations conducted at a defined examination hall of the University, as per the specified dates and times.
The detailed schedule of the End Semester Theory Examination conducted at the end of a Semester shall be published/announced by the Controller of Examinations (COE) at least two weeks before the scheduled Date of such Examinations, will be notified through the Website and will be displayed on the University notice boards.
The End Semester Theory Examination shall be conducted at the designated examination halls of the University.
Entry into the theory examination hall will be allowed only on production of the Admit Card along with a valid Student’s ID Card.
No student will be allowed to enter 15 minutes after the commencement of the 3-hour examination without the written permission of the Controller of Examinations. However, such permission may only be granted within the first 30 minutes after the commencement of the examination.
Instructions on the Admit Card/Answer Script and other related examination rules are to be strictly followed by students during examinations.

End Semester Examinations (ESE) for Practical Courses (Including Practical papers, Project Papers, Internship, Assignments, Field Work, etc.)

Project Papers, Practical Papers, Assignments, Internship, Dissertation, Viva- Voce, Jury Examinations for such practical, skill-based Courses are the comprehensive examination components (conducted typically at the end of the concerned Semester) of the concerned course, as prescribed by the programme curriculum and syllabus.
The tentative starting dates for the End Semester Practical Examinations shall be published in the Almanac of the University, or as per the University Notifications to this effect.
The scheduling of all Practical Examinations shall be provided by the Dean of the Faculty / School concerned in advance of the scheduled commencement of the practical examinations.
The COE will notify the schedule on the Notice Boards and the University website.
The End Semester Practical Examination shall be conducted at the designated examination hall/ presentation room/ laboratory/ workshop/ moot court, etc. of the University.
Entry into the practical examination will be allowed only on production of the Admit Card along with a valid Student’s ID Card.

Arrears Examinations

An Arrear paper is one in which a student fails to secure the minimum qualifying marks.
An Arrear paper may arise either for failure to secure the minimum qualifying marks in a paper or for absence. This will be indicated in the Semester Mark Sheet.
A student will be permitted to appear for an Arrear paper in the next appropriate Semester, subject to the fulfilment of requirements i.e. to appear for the Arrear Examination, students must fill out the examination form and pay the fee, usually through online mode available on the University website (www.sxuk.edu.in) through the student’s login.
A Composite paper has two components: Theory and Practical.
A student has to pass both separately. However, he/she will have to appear in the next appropriate Semester for an Arrear Examination only for the part (Theory/Practical) in which he/she has failed or has been absent.
Application to appear for Arrear paper(s), including payment of fees, will only be done online. The COE will notify the fee(s) to be paid for the Arrears paper. Any application for appearing in the Arrear Examinations will not be entertained after the Due Date.

Supplementary Examinations

Supplementary Examinations will be held for students of the undergraduate (UG) course, who have Arrear papers only from Semesters 7 and/or 8 (Semesters 9 and/or 10 in case of Law courses), provided there are no Arrear papers from Semesters 1 – 6 (Semesters 1 – 8 in case of Law courses).
The Supplementary Examinations will be held tentatively within 30 working days after the publication of Semester 8 (Semester 10 in case of Law courses) results.
Supplementary Examinations will be held for students of the Postgraduate (PG) course, who have Arrear papers only from Semesters 3 and/or 4, provided there are no Arrear papers from Semesters 1 – 2.
The Supplementary Examinations will be held tentatively within 30 working days after the publication of Semester 4 results.
The Supplementary Examinations shall be conducted for all the Theory and Practical Papers/ Minor Projects/ Major Projects/ Industrial/ Training/ Internships, etc. of the final year only.
The schedule for the Supplementary Examinations shall be prepared and announced by the Controller of Examinations.
The results of Supplementary Examinations shall be declared tentatively within 15 working days of conduct of the examinations.
A student who fails to appear or qualify in the Supplementary Examinations shall reappear in the examinations when scheduled for the next batch of students within the time span prescribed for the programme.
Students who complete the course after appearing in the Supplementary Examination will not be awarded any rank/award/medal and will not be considered for any order of merit.
A student with a disciplinary charge against his/her name may not be allowed to appear for the Supplementary Examination.
To appear for the Supplementary Examination, students must fill up the Supplementary Examination form and pay the fee, usually through online mode available on the University website (www.sxuk.edu.in) through the student’s login portal.
The COE will notify the fee for the Supplementary Examinations.
Any application for appearing in the Supplementary Examinations will not be entertained after the Due Date.
