National Cadet Corps (NCC)
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis as a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, the Navy and Air Force. Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and drill. Officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course. It is one of the largest youth organizations in the world, serving as a premier grooming ground for future leaders and instilling a sense of discipline, patriotism, and social responsibility among the youth of India. Established in 1948, the NCC operates under the Ministry of Defence and plays a crucial role in shaping the character and ethos of the nation's youth. It fosters leadership and patriotism.
As a Jesuit institution, St. Xavier’s University is a vibrant community that embodies the enduring principles of St. Ignatius of Loyola: cura personalis, or care for the whole person; magis, the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours; and a deep commitment to service. Our university is dedicated to holistic growth, shaping empathetic leaders who will make a meaningful impact in society. With a rich history that continues to inspire, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, is a beacon of knowledge that illuminates minds and transforms lives, sparking positive change in the world around us.

St. Xavier’s University has received the approval from the Additional Director General, NCC, West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate, Kol C, in October 2025 to raise their (SD/SW) Unit with 1 Coy (160) cadets. We are being governed by the 18 Bengal Battalion, NCC, Indian Army (erstwhile 1 Bengal CTR). With this proud introduction of NCC, our University is providing its students with a wealth of opportunities to cultivate discipline, leadership, and a community-focused mindset. It provides a structured platform for character development, fostering qualities like resilience, confidence, and responsibility. Through rigorous training in leadership, survival skills, physical fitness, and adventure sports, students build discipline and teamwork—skills that prepare them for diverse career paths and equip them to face real-world challenges with confidence and determination. NCC serves as a forum for developing empathy and civic responsibility and the Cadets would actively engage in society through initiatives such as cleanliness drives, community service, and awareness campaigns, gaining a deeper understanding of societal challenges. These experiences instill a strong sense of social responsibility, empowering students to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

The first batch of NCC cadets consists of 52 students, selected by the NCC Battalion from the trials. Over the period of three years, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata aims to have a strong contingent of 160 well-trained NCC cadets.
