Startup insights highlight Xavier’s lecture series
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) hosted an engaging seminar lecture series on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” on April 16, 2026 at the university campus. The programme was organised by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE), aiming to nurture entrepreneurial thinking among students.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Arijit Bhattacharya, a noted serial entrepreneur, angel investor, and TEDx speaker. Drawing from his extensive experience, Dr. Bhattacharya highlighted key aspects of innovation-driven ventures, startup ecosystems, and challenges entrepreneurs face in real-world scenarios.
Dr. Bhattacharya emphasised the importance of sustainable business models and strategic thinking in today’s competitive environment. The session was interactive.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Soma Sur, President of IIC. Participants described the session as insightful and motivating.

St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) hosted the second edition of its national-level startup and business hackathon “XavSpark 2.0” on March 19, 2026 at the university campus.
Organized by the Institutional Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of SXUK, the event brought together students, young innovators, and startup enthusiasts from premier institutes like IIT–BHU, IIM Bodh Gaya, SCMHRD, Jadavpur University, VIT-AP, Amity University, and SRMIST, etc.
The hackathon aimed to provide an incubatory platform for budding entrepreneurs to pitch disruptive ideas and develop feasible, market-ready business solutions.
Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of SXUK delivered the inaugural address, urging students to think boldly and convert their ideas into ventures with real-world impact. Dignitaries and jury members were felicitated for their contributions to the programme.
The jury panel for the final round comprised Dr. Arijit Bhattacharya, serial entrepreneur and angel investor; Dr. Deboshi De, CEO of Smart Management Consultancy; and Dr. Gautam Dutta from SXUK.
Alongside the main hackathon, the event featured multiple competitive activities, designed to assess communication clarity, coding aptitude, and strategic acumen of participants respectively.
In the Business Hackathon, Oillovators from the Institute of Engineering & Management, Kolkata secured the first prize (₹40,000). Team Podhey from SXUK was declared first runner-up (₹30,000), while NeuroDrive from FORE School of Management, New Delhi took the second runner-up position.
In Pitch it Plain, Shri Shikshayatan College claimed the top spot, followed by the Institute of Business Management, Jadavpur University, and SXUK.
In Boardroom Blitz, SXUK won the first prize, Sister Nivedita University bagged the first runner-up position, and SXUK secured the second runner-up spot.
In the Clean Code Relay, UEM (Team 4) won the first prize, Heritage Academy took the first runner-up position, and UEM (Team 5) emerged as second runner-up.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Monalika Dey.

IIC conducts entrepreneurial event
A Pitch Deck Event was organized by Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata on February 14, 2026 at the university campus.
The event aimed to provide a structured platform for university students to present their innovative business ideas, start-up concepts, and entrepreneurial solutions. The event witnessed the participation of 6 groups from SXUK, representing diverse disciplines and innovative domains.
Each group presented their business ideas through structured pitch deck covering key aspects such as problem statement, proposed solution, potential market, revenue model, scalability, and financial projections. The presentations were evaluated by a panel of experts who provided constructive feedback. 4 groups were selected based on the originality of their ideas, clarity of business model, and growth potential.
The event encouraged entrepreneurial spirit among students and strengthened the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and start-up culture on campus.

SXUK conducts MDP for bank employees
Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) in collaboration with Fr. Lafont Centre for Excellence in Research and Innovation (LCERI) and St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) conducted a four-day Management Development Programme (MDP) from December 5 to 9, 2025 at the university campus.
The programme was designed to upskill the Internal Operations Staff of SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd. to enhance customer experience through improved internal efficiency, communication, and service delivery.
The participants were the internal operations staff of SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd. The programme focused on equipping the participants with practical tools and strategies in operations management, leadership, and customer-centric service. Faculty members from SXUK and senior officials from SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd. were the resource persons.

SXUK organises startup event
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata organised a one-day startup event titled “Startup Premier League” on November 8, 2025 at the university campus.
It was organized by the Institutional Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, in association with Techaarohan Bharat Foundation (Startup Ki Pathshala).
The event aimed to provide a dynamic platform for students and aspiring entrepreneurs to explore innovative ideas, strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset, and foster collaboration across institutions. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from various educational institutions from New Town and Salt Lake, including SXUK.
Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor of SXUK, delivered the inaugural address on the significance of entrepreneurship and innovation in nation-building. Dr. Debasish Ghosh, Head, Technology Business Development & Incubation, Indian Statistical Institute, was the keynote speaker. He focussed on fostering a startup ecosystem and supporting early-stage innovators.
Dr. Arnab Basu, Co-Founder & CEO, Yancha Positive Parenting LLP, discussed the importance of mentorship and perseverance in entrepreneurship and provided an overview of the programme. The Discovery Round Pitching Sessions allowed participating teams to present their startup ideas before a panel of successful entrepreneurs. The jury provided constructive feedback on market feasibility, innovation, and business model scalability.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Prabhat Das of Techaarohan Bharat Foundation (Startup Ki Pathshala), who highlighted the upcoming phases aimed at nurturing innovative ideas and transforming them into viable ventures.

CICE hosts MDP for SBI staff members
Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) in collaboration with the Fr. Introductory Session for Incubation held on 21st July 2025
Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata organised the introductory session for incubation in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) on July 21, 2025 at the university campus.
The session aims to nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among students across all departments of the university.
35 students from various departments of SXUK, having interest in innovation and entrepreneurial ventures, attended this programme.
Dr. Deborshi De was the resource person. He delivered his lecture on the incubation process and available support mechanisms, sparking interest and involvement in entrepreneurial activities within the university framework among the students.

Workshop on Data Visualization with Power BI held on 12th & 13th April 2025.
The Research and Development Cell of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) in collaboration with the Centre for Incubation, Consultancy and Entrepreneurship (CICE) of SXUK organised a two-day workshop on Data Visualisation with Power Business Intelligence (BI) on April 12 and 13, 2025 at the university campus.
A total of 30 faculty members, research scholars of SXUK and other institutions participated in this workshop.
The conference began with the welcome address by Prof. Ashis Mitra, Registrar, followed by the introduction and felicitation of the resource person, Prof. Atanu Ghosh. Dr. Somnath Banerjee, Convener of the workshop briefed on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in today’s world and the necessity of training about Power BI. Dr. Monalika Dey, Joint Convener of the workshop, coordinated and conducted the inaugural session.
The training session began with an introduction to the domain of Power BI and how the companies use it to take important decisions pertaining to the sales, purchase and fixation of discount rates. Prof. Ghosh then demonstrated how different types of charts can be created using this software, and also emphasised the usage of charts.
Participants also learned columnar charts, doughnut chart, DAX basics, report publishing and visualising the charts as a form of storytelling, followed by an interactive session. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Somnath Banerjee.

CICE has conducted a study to map major interest areas of respected faculty members for consultancy projects. Some of the interest areas are organizational designing & strategy, labour law, women & child welfare, CSR activities, organization culture management, conflict management, soft skills, analytics in decision making, rural development, NGO management, stock & derivative Market etc.
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, encourages its faculty members to undertake consultancy projects with the Government Departments, PSUs, Corporate Sector, Industry bodies, NGOs and Academic institutions across the globe. The consultancy projects will facilitate the exchange of knowledge & expertise, and create social awareness, for the greater good of global society.For existence and continuous expansion, industries require a swift transition or augmentation to the updated ways in 2022, where consultancy service plays highly important role. He mentioned the benchmark set by MIT in terms of consultancy and winning noble prizes. Consultancy in terms of advice and beyond advice plays vital role in development of a country.
The programme was enriched by sharing of huge spectrum of knowledge and deep insights on consultancy by Dr. Anup Kumar Sinha, Non-Executive (Independent) Chairman - Bandhan Bank, Former Professor – IIMC, and Dr. Gautam Dutta, Professor- IIFT Kolkata & Delhi, highlighting the importance & impact of taking up various consultancy projects at present scenario serving the social good, requirements for consultancy projects across Commerce, Management, English, Economics, Media Science, Law and other functions. In this backdrop, Centre for Incubation, Consultancy & Entrepreneurship (CICE) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata has conducted an orientation programme on Business Planning: ‘Seed-Biz’. The Inaugural eConference of SEED-BIZ was followed by submission of business plans by budding entrepreneurs, evaluation by esteemed Jury Panel from Industry & Academia, felicitation of the highest ranked plans and individual Expert sessionfor each business plan group to make plans more robust to implement in near future.

Father VC mentioned that how an entrepreneur multiplies, and a manager keeps adding. ‘Entrepreneurship’ with high emerging power in the world works as a locomotive for the economic development of a country. In India, entrepreneurs have come a long way in breaking the financial and social barriers. MSMEs have been the backbone of Indian economy and is one of the most crucial segments that let the economy grow by leaps and bounds. The pandemic outbreakand the consequent stoppage of economic activities have made great impact on MSMEs having access to limited financial resources, limited borrowing capacity due to the disproportionate presence in economic sectors affected by social distancing measures and transport disruptions.Various types of SMEs such as village handicraft makers(weaving, embroidery etc.), potteries, dying, small machine shops, food processing, pharmaceuticals restaurants, knitting, small dairy process etc. are becoming increasingly important to economic development in India.
Father VC has mentioned how ‘SEED-BIZ’ emphasized on importance of strong business planning, robust revenue model, uniqueness of business ideas, and strategies behind successful business. 22 Business plans were submitted by 53 students in groups fromvarious courses of the University and these students have shown great interests towards various sectors with major focus on Food & Beverages, Biotechnology, Tour & Travel, Data &Security, Information Technology, Boutique, Fashion, Health&Wellness, Beauty, Education& Training and Gaming Console. Father VC has congratulated all the students who participated to ‘SEED-BIZ’.
‘SEED-BIZ’worked towardsempowering budding entrepreneurs to be catalysts of change, importance of strategy, opportunities, industry leaders connect, and majorly, how to improve the business plans to implement in near future. The orientation programme Seed-Biz has identified the potential budding entrepreneurs from St. Xavier’s University, Kolkataand their focus business categories.Father VC has mentioned that such programmeswill always inspire students to think of entrepreneurship and explore possibilities.

They mentioned connection between economic environment and entrepreneurial mindset. The 7 essentials for Business planning are simple plan, market focus, over estimation of cost, support team, continuous assessment of plan, understanding the commitment behind establishing the business. Now, in India, financial support, technical support, human resource support- all three important contributors to successful entrepreneurship are available.

The eConference started with kind blessings and Welcome Address by Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. Father VC shared experience during his visits to Xaverian Entrepreneurs and Industrialists in London and other parts of England including Mr.L. N. Mittal. Mr. Nick Low, British Deputy High Commissioner Kolkata mentioned the strong relation and cooperation between the United Kingdom and India in fighting the pandemic, trade investment, defence, health, fight against climate change. The eConference started with kind blessings and Welcome Address by Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. Father VC has congratulated CICE for this programme. He has mentioned Xaverian Entrepreneurs and the difference between managers and entrepreneurs. Chief Guest Mr. Prabhat K Bezboruah, Chairman, Tea Board India, emphasized on importance of trust in business, technology upgradation, and deciding the aim of entrepreneurship as growth should not be the only goal in today’s context. Mr. Sitanath Mukherjee, Asst. Director, MSME DI Kolkata highlighted promising products/ service sectors which can sustain for another 8-10 years. He mentioned several Govt. schemes. He also mentions YUKTI 2.0. The programme was highly enriched by insights from all the eminent speakers.

In this context, Centre for Incubation, Entrepreneurship and Consultancy (CICE) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata is conducting a series of eConferences: ‘Looking Beyond Borders’, and started with ‘Exploring Opportunities for Entrepreneurs to do Business with Poland’ on 19th February 2021.
The eConference started with kind blessings and Welcome Address by Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. Father VC mentioned about the newly startedCentre for Incubation, Consultancy and Entrepreneurship (CICE). Father VC shared from his experience aboutPolish people having great respect for India, and congratulated for the wonderful effort made with Republic of Poland, as the conference discussions will highly benefit students and faculty members. He mentioned regarding possibilities of many avenuesto start with and explore the opportunities for students beyond borders. St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata has a very strong Alumni association, and many of the alumni are in Poland. St. Xavier’s University, Kolkataalready has European chapter, England chapter, along with chapters in many other countries. Many of the alumni are leading ones in industry oracademia, and are showing the way to the present students on how to explore possibilities beyond borders.
Chief GuestH.E. Prof. Adam Burakowski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to India thanked Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J. Vice-Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata for his interesting insight on Poland-India relation. India due to its economic and demographic potential has become very important for Polish Economic policy. Poland is happy to enhance their economic cooperation by increasing exports and encouraging investors from India to take Poland as business destination. His Excellency mentioned Indian cuisine and music is getting popular in Poland. He wished for fruitful exchange of ideas through the webinar.
