The Department of Economics started its journey in July 2018 with a three-year (six semesters) undergraduate programme and a two-year (four semesters) postgraduate programme. The department has also started offering a Ph.D. programme on specialised economic issues from June 2020. It provides quality education in line with the requirements of today’s competitive industry. The department offers the latest course structure both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and also provides good exposure to advanced statistical tools, statistical software and various types of data for the professional development of the students. To raise the quality of the education and to have a better understanding of the subject, there is advanced pedagogy within the department. The students are also encouraged to carry out copious research work to amplify their interest in the subject. The department frequently organizes invited lectures and several training programmes for the students. It provides guidance for competitive examinations and corporate placement to boost up the confidence level of students during written examinations and interview sessions. St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata possesses an efficient and committed placement committee that includes representatives from the faculty members and students of the department.

Keeping in mind the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" the Economic Society of the department actively organizes various activities throughout the academic year.

The areas of specialization and academic interests of the faculties include Open Economy Macroeconomics, International Economics, Mathematical Economics, Game Theory, Health Economics, Development Economics, Labour Economics, Political Economy, Energy Economics, Applied Econometrics and Environmental Economics.
