Contemporary society is plagued with numerous social problems which usher professional approach in interventions. Social work as a profession, committed to the well-being of society, promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and empowerment and liberation of people from oppression and marginalization. Recognizing the acute shortage of social workers in eastern India and especially in West Bengal, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, with its goal of ‘reaching the unreached’ has decided to start the Master of Social Work course in 2017. Thus, the Department runs two years PG programme in Social Work. Social work education provided at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata has set international standard relevant to contemporary era. It imparts phenomenal experience to students ushering in intellectual, social and cultural transformation in them. The Master’s programme in Social work is devised to develop professionals to work in the field of development and welfare. The Department orients students on socio-economic realities and developmental issues and prepares them to address problems related to rights, development, gender, etc. Students are trained in planning, mobilising resources, managing development/welfare organisations, research, policy studies and policy formulation, etc.
