About the Department
The Department of Psychology at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata began its academic journey in August 2021 with the launch of the M.A. in Psychology programme. Since then, the department has steadily grown into a vibrant academic space dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and professional development. At present, the department offers B.A. in Psychology, M.A. in Psychology, and Ph.D. in Psychology programmes. At the postgraduate level, students can pursue specializations in Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, and Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources, enabling them to develop focused expertise aligned with diverse career pathways in psychology.
The undergraduate programme is designed to provide students with a strong conceptual foundation while encouraging the practical application of psychological knowledge. Courses such as Forensic Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Health Psychology, Social Psychology, Organizational Psychology, and Community Psychology integrate theoretical understanding with experiential learning. Through case study discussions, academic presentations, research projects, and applied assignments, students are encouraged to connect classroom learning with real-world psychological issues and everyday life.
At the postgraduate level, students engage more deeply with advanced theoretical perspectives and research methodologies. Dissertations and theses form an integral part of the programme, equipping students with the skills necessary to undertake independent research and prepare for future academic and professional pursuits.
