IQAC of SXUK organizes awareness programme on IPR

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) organized an awareness programme on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) under National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) on April 2, 2022 in virtual mode. Mr. Arnab Bhattacharya, Examiner of Patents and Designer of the Kolkata-based patent office was the resource person in this programme.

Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, S.J. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of SXUK delivered the welcome address. Fr. Vice-Chancellor said that IPR is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect. He further stressed on the importance of IPR and its various perspectives in academic works. IPRs are legal rights that protect creations and/or inventions resulting from intellectual activity, he opined.

Mr. Arnab Bhattacharya discussed on the uses of IPRs in the industrial, scientific, literaryand artistic fields. He vividly described different types of common IPRs like patents, copyrights, marks, industrial design rights, geographical indications and trade secrets.Encouraging the creation of the wide variety of intellectual goods is the motto of IPR. In the academic world, there is a huge importance of maintaining IPR properly, he added. IPR gives economic incentivesto academicians for their noble creations; thus it allows creators to benefit from the information and intellectual goods and also helps them to protect their ideas and prevent copying, he further said.

All the faculty members and research scholars of the University attended this virtual awareness session. The programme concluded with a brief interactive session with the participants. Dr. Soma Sur,Ph.D Coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks. Dr. TuhinUtsab Paul, Assistant Registrar was the emcee.

All the participants were issued certificate of participation by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
