Dr. Chayanika Mitra completed her Ph.D. in Economics in June 2019 under the supervision of Professor Amita Majumder at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. Her doctoral thesis, titled “Gender Bias in Education in West Bengal,” focused on the application of applied econometric techniques to examine educational expenditure and educational attainment in West Bengal from a gender perspective. Her research interests primarily lie in applied econometrics, gender economics, education economics, and development studies.
She obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from Jadavpur University in 2011 and 2013, respectively. She qualified the UGC-NET in Economics in June 2015.
Her academic contributions have been recognised through several achievements and distinctions, including:
- Awarded a Research Project Grant of ₹15 lakh by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) for conducting research under “Punyashloka Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Special Call for Women-Led Research on Women-Led Development”
- Awarded the Summer Research Fellowship Programme (2024) by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi.
- Awarded the Young Researcher Award (2020) by the Institute of Scholars (InSc) for the research paper titled “Gender Bias in Household Education Expenditure: The Case of West Bengal” (co-authored with Prof. Amita Majumder), published in Indian Growth and Development Review, 12(2), 129–150.
