Dr. Debolina Chatterjee is a Senior Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Xavier Law School, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, a position held since November 2020. She has worked towards integrating key sociological perspectives into the study of law, fostering a holistic learning environment for future legal professionals. Prior to this role, she has served as an Assistant Professor for over three years at J.D. Birla Institute under Jadavpur University and has taught as a Guest Lecturer at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, Shibpur.
Dr. Chatterjee completed her B.A. in Sociology from Presidency College, Kolkata, followed by an M.A. in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. After being awarded wih UGC NET JRF, she pursued her Ph.D. from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and was awarded the doctoral degree in 2019. Her thesis explored how women perceive and negotiate their health within the criminal justice system under conditions of confinement, laying the groundwork for her core research interests and contributions in prison studies, sociology of health, and ageing.
She has published in reputed journals in her field, including The Prison Journal, Women & Criminal Justice, and the International Journal of Prisoner Health. She has also co-authored the book COVID-19, Older Adults and the Ageing Society published by Routledge, in 2022. Her research has been well received during conferences in India, France, Denmark and Sri Lanka.
During 2025-26, she was invited as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies (CAPAS), Heidelberg University, Germany.
