Dr. Rupa Biswas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, where she has been serving since July 2018. She completed her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Social Work from Visva-Bharati and secured first position in her postgraduate programme.
Dr. Biswas began her professional journey as a development professional and worked as a Consultant with Tata Steel Rural Development Society, contributing to community development initiatives. She also served as a Protection Officer under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal, where she worked extensively on issues concerning domestic violence against women.
Driven by her passion for teaching and research, she transitioned into academia after qualifying the UGC-NET examination and enrolling in a Ph.D. programme. Prior to joining St. Xavier’s University, she served as visiting faculty at several reputed institutions, including National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, Bankura University, Rabindra Bharati University, and Netaji Subhas Open University. With more than ten years of academic experience and over two and a half years of experience as a development professional Dr. Biswas has developed a strong interdisciplinary perspective that bridges theory and practice in the field of Social Work. Beyond academics, she has a keen interest in travelling, photography and reading books
