Biographical Sketch

Dr. Somak Maitra is an Associate Professor of Management in the Faculty of Commerce and Management at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. With over 25 years of combined experience spanning academia and industry, he brings a distinctive blend of corporate insight and scholarly rigour to higher education. He holds a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Calcutta, where his doctoral research examined the prospects and challenges of smart card technology in India, and an MBA in Marketing Management from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management.

Dr. Maitra served as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management at SXUK from July 2019 to June 2023, providing strategic leadership in curriculum development, programme review, research quality assurance, admissions, and fostering industry–academia collaboration across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In his current role, he teaches Marketing management for PG and UG  students, and actively contributes to examination design, curriculum planning, and academic administration.

Prior to joining academia full-time, Dr. Maitra held senior positions at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS iON), JIL Information Technology (Jaypee Group), and other organisations, where he led large-scale online assessment operations, business development initiatives, and the implementation of university management systems across eastern India. His research interests centre around disruptive technologies and their transformative impact on social inclusion and education and sustainability. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics including smart card applications, biometric systems, digital identity, and telecommunications. An audio electronics enthusiast and keen runner, he actively pursues DIY audio projects and participates in distance running events in Kolkata.
