Biographical Sketch

Dr. Sourav Kumar Mahapatra has joined as an Assistant Professor in July 2026 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering under the Xavier School of Engineering and Technology at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata. He has received his B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees in Mechanical Engineering on 2014 and 2018 respectively from BPUT, Rourkela and VSSUT, Burla. He was awarded Ph.D. degree for his Doctoral studies in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, Odisha in 2025. He has qualified GATE in 2016, 2020 and 2024 respectively. His research interests include Manufacturing and Machining, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning, Data driven Modelling, Computational Modelling, Materials Characterization, Tribology, Tribo-informatics, Composite Materials, Drilling of Polymer Composites and Thermal Barrier Coatings. 

He is having 2 years of industrial experience, 1.5 years of teaching experience and 5 years of research experience. His teaching approach focuses on connecting theory with hands-on applications, especially in manufacturing labs and students projects. His long term research vision is to develop sustainable, high performance engineering materials and integrate new machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence tools for intelligent manufacturing and predictive materials engineering. He is particularly interested in building collaborative research in green composites, smart machining and data driven materials design while contributing effectively to teaching, research supervision and sponsored projects.
